Headlight Restoration
in Sacramento, CA

Cars that live on Sacramento streets and in open apartment lots take sun on their headlights every day. When the lenses turn yellow and foggy, we sand, polish and protect them so they’re clear again. It’s a $75 add-on.

Is it time? Check your lenses

Headlights wear out slowly, so it’s easy not to notice. Walk to the front of your car in daylight and look for these signs:

  • A yellow or amber cast, often worst along the top
  • A hazy, milky look, like frosted glass
  • A rough feel when you run a finger across the lens
  • Small cracks or flaking in the outer layer
  • A dim, scattered beam on the garage door or a wall at night

Why plastic headlights fade

Most headlight lenses today are plastic. The factory adds a thin clear coat to shield them from the sun. Years of UV light break that coat down. First it turns dull, then yellow, and later it can peel or crack.

Sacramento’s long, hot summers speed that up. Plenty of cars here don’t have a garage. They sit at the curb in Midtown or East Sacramento, or in an open apartment lot in Natomas, with the front end facing the sun all day. That’s why we see yellow lenses on cars that are only a few years old.

Car washes and road grit add to the damage. Brushes and dirty towels leave fine scratches in the softened surface, and those scratches catch dirt and scatter light even more.

Our process

Five steps to bright, clear lenses.

Clear lenses look better, and they help you see more of the road.

01

Check

We look for cracks, inside moisture and deep pits, and tell you what to expect.

02

Mask

Paint and trim around the lens are taped off so only the lens is sanded.

03

Sand

Wet sanding removes the yellow layer, then finer steps smooth the surface.

04

Polish

A machine polish brings the lens back to clear.

05

Protect

A protective layer goes on to help the lens stay clear longer.

Better light on the road

Foggy lenses don’t just look tired. They let less light through and send it in the wrong directions, so even new bulbs can look weak. You see less of the road, and other drivers can get more glare.

That matters on a dark commute on I-5, I-80, Business 80 or US-50. It matters even more in winter, when rain and early sunsets mean more driving at night. Clear lenses help your headlights put light where you need it.

Lots of Sacramento driving also happens on streets lined with big trees, where the shade makes evening roads darker sooner. Good lighting helps you spot cyclists, people crossing and the odd branch on the road after a storm.

What the restoration includes

Each lens gets the same careful steps:

  • Masking the paint and trim around the headlight
  • Wet sanding to remove the yellow, failing outer layer
  • Finer sanding steps to smooth out the marks
  • Machine polishing to bring back clarity
  • A protective layer to help slow down future yellowing

What it won’t fix

Restoration works on the outside of the lens. It can’t clear fog or water trapped inside the housing, repair a cracked lens or fix a burned-out bulb. Deep pits from years of road debris may soften but not fully go away. If we see any of these, we’ll tell you before we start, so you don’t pay to restore a light that needs a repair or replacement.

It also isn’t permanent. The sun will keep working on the lens. Think of it as a reset you can repeat when the haze starts to come back. Washing the car often and parking in shade when you can help it stay clear longer.

If you’re not sure whether your lenses can be restored, send us a close-up photo of each headlight in daylight. That’s often enough for us to tell you what to expect.

Make it part of a detail

Headlight restoration is a $75 add-on, so most people pair it with a wash or full detail. Clear lenses look best next to clean paint, and the whole front end looks finished. The work happens during the same visit, so there is no separate appointment to book. Our exterior detailing in Sacramento is a natural match.

It’s also a smart step before you sell a car. Yellow headlights are one of the first things buyers notice, and they make a car look older than it is.

New headlight assemblies can be costly, especially on cars with LED lights. When the only problem is a hazy outer surface, restoring the lens is usually the simpler and much cheaper fix.

FAQ

Headlight Restoration questions

How long do restored headlights stay clear?

It depends on sun and care. The protective layer, regular washing and shade all help them stay clear much longer than a quick polish.

My car parks on the street. Is restoration still worth it?

Yes. Street-parked cars take the most sun, which is why their lenses yellow fastest. The fix still works; you may just want to repeat it sooner.

Can you fix condensation inside the headlight?

No. Moisture inside the housing usually means a failed seal. That needs a repair or a new headlight.

Do I have to book a full detail?

It’s offered as a $75 add-on to a detail. Pairing it with an exterior wash is the most popular choice.

Will my headlights look new?

Most look much clearer. Very old lenses with deep pits or cracks will improve but may not look new.
