Why Tahoe boats fade faster
South Lake Tahoe sits at about 6,200 feet. The thin air lets more UV light through, and the lake reflects it back up at the boat. Gelcoat that sits in that sun turns dull and chalky. Rub your hand on the side of the hull and if it comes away white, that is oxidation.
Vinyl seats take the same sun. They dry out, fade and can crack at the seams. Pine pollen in late spring coats everything in yellow dust, and pine sap drips on boats parked under trees. Water spots form when the lake water dries on the hull in the sun.
Dark hulls show oxidation and water spots the fastest. Vinyl with mildew spots can often be cleaned, though dark stains that have soaked in may not fully come out.
Metal rails and cleats can spot and dull too, and a polish brings back much of the shine.
Where we work
Many of our Tahoe boat jobs are on the trailer, in a driveway or at a storage yard. That is often the easiest setup because we can reach the whole hull.
We can also work at slips and docks around Tahoe Keys and Ski Run, but only where the marina or storage allows outside service. Please check with your marina first. Some marinas have their own rules about who can work on the docks and what products can be used near the water.
Vacation homes are common here, and owners are not always in town. If your boat is at your place in Tahoe Keys or Meyers, you don’t need to be there. Just tell us where the boat is and how we can reach it.
We bring our own filtered water and power, so we don’t need a hookup at the dock or storage yard.
Spring get-ready and fall storage prep
In spring, we wash off the winter dust, polish off oxidation and wax the hull so it launches clean. In fall, before the boat is covered or stored, we clean it inside and out and dry the interior well. A boat put away dirty and damp is more likely to grow mildew over the winter.
If you can, book your spring visit a few weeks before you plan to launch, so there is time to fit it in before the season starts.
We don’t winterize engines or do mechanical work. That’s a job for a marine mechanic. We focus on how the boat looks and feels. If your tow vehicle could use a clean too, see our mobile detailing in South Lake Tahoe.
Between details
A few small habits keep the boat looking good longer. Rinse it with fresh water after a day on the lake, and dry it with a soft towel to stop water spots. Use a fitted cover when the boat isn’t in use, and keep it out from under pine trees if you can.
Wax or sealant wears off faster on a boat than on a car because of the sun and water. Many owners have us add a fresh coat mid-season so the gelcoat stays protected through fall.
